Ayurvedic Medicine For Proteinuria

Proteinuria is a term completely unfamiliar to the common masses unless you have undergone a renal test and your doctor has mentioned this term while discussing the reports with you. In simple terms, proteinuria, or protein in urine, is a condition where a person’s urine exhibits a high amount of protein. Your urine can exhibit a high amount of protein when you are dehydrated or have undergone a strenuous exercise routine. One must remember that our kidneys are designed in a way not to leak a high amount of protein via urine. However, when your kidneys are damaged then it may result in a higher amount of protein getting leaked via urine. Ayurvedic treatment of this renal ailment uses potent Ayurvedic medicine for proteinuria treatment.

Causes and Risk Factors

Some people tend to develop this renal ailment. Some common risk factors are:

Diagnosing Proteinuria

Some of the ways through which proteinuria is diagnosed are:

  • 24-hour urine protein test
  • Glomerular filtrate rate (GFR) blood test
  • Kidney biopsy

Proteinuria Treatment in Ayurveda

Ayurvedic treatment for this renal ailment makes use of Ayurvedic medicine for proteinuria treatment. Apart from the appropriate medication for proteinuria treatment, Ayurveda places huge emphasis on the right lifestyle and diet habits. These habits are geared towards improving your overall renal health.

Ayurvedic Medicine for Proteinuria

Medicines that are often used to treat proteinuria in Ayurveda are:

1. Gokshura

Gokshura - Ayurvedic Medicine for Proteinuria

Gokshura is a potent medicine to reduce protein in urine. The diuretic properties of this herb help reduce the accumulation of wastes in the body, by encouraging a healthy outflow of urine from the body. Apart from this, Gokshura is also helpful in preventing glomerulonephritis as it has anti-inflammatory properties.

2. Punarnava

Punarnava - Ayurvedic Medicine for Proteinuria

This potent Ayurvedic herb is rich in a compound called punarnavoside glycoside. This herb not only repairs the already damaged renal tissues but helps regenerate kidney tissues in the body. It also has diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties.

3. Shatavari

Shatavari - Ayurvedic Medicine for Proteinuria

Shatavari has long been used for treating various kidney ailments as it can strengthen your renal functions. Apart from this, the presence of anti-inflammatory properties in this herb inhibits renal infections and keeps our kidneys healthy.

4. Palash

Palash - Ayurvedic Medicine for Proteinuria

Palash’s astringent, diuretic, and tonic properties help improve the overall functioning of our kidneys. In the majority of the cases, Ayurvedic herbs rarely cause any side effects, however, some patients may complain of symptoms like mild fever, burning sensation in the throat, etc. That is why, it is a wise idea to consult with your doctor before consuming any proteinuria medicine.

Diet and Lifestyle Modifications for Proteinuria Patients

  • Always keep yourself well-hydrated, as it helps improve your renal functions. Replenishing your hydration needs with water, juices, herbal teas, etc. is perfect; do not drink aerated drinks though. Carbonated drinks often dehydrate you.
  • Consuming turmeric and cinnamon control blood sugar levels. This helps prevent a rise in the blood glucose levels in the body.
  • Grains like rice, millet, and wheat have been proven to strengthen renal functions. Consume them regularly.
  • Amla reduces oxidative stress in the kidney tissues. It also boosts our overall immunity.
  • Processed, high-sodium, and high-protein foods are not recommended for proteinuria patients. Such foods increase creatinine levels, lead to high blood pressure, and put a lot of pressure on our kidneys.
  • Moderate the consumption of animal protein. A high consumption of animal protein results in elevated creatinine levels in the body. If possible, stay away from chicken, meat, fish, etc. Consuming animal protein in large quantities may also put a strain on your kidneys.
  • Avoid alcohol and tobacco for healthy kidneys. Both alcohol and tobacco cause multiple health disorders including weakening renal functions. Smoking has been linked with damaged renal tissues. Alcohol, if consumed excessively, results in damaged liver. You must strictly avoid both alcohol and tobacco.
  • Salamba Bhujangasana, Pawanmuktasana, Shashankasana, and SetuBandhasana are effective in improving renal functions as they help boost blood flow to the kidneys. To manage stress, do deep-breathing exercises and meditation. You can also include mild jogging, swimming, and other such low-impact exercises in your daily life for better renal health. However, do exercises after consulting with your doctor.

Conclusion

Proteinuria is a common kidney disease and can easily be treated with apt measures. Eating a kidney-friendly diet, hydrating yourself well, avoiding alcohol and tobacco, managing stress, etc. help prevent proteinuria. However, if your symptoms are severe, then seeking a piece of advice from your healthcare provider is strongly recommended.
