Jaundice is a broader term used to describe a yellowish coloration of the skin and whites of the eyes. When you have jaundice, even the body fluid turns out to be yellow at times which also include your urine.
The color of the skin depends on the levels of bilirubin produced by the liver. As bilirubin is a form of waste in the blood, its levels in the bloodstream may turn your skin yellow or brown if it is extremely high.
Jaundice can happen to people of all ages and is normally the result of your liver function or a bile duct.
In a person with jaundice, symptoms may or may not be apparent, and the condition is mostly diagnosed accidentally. How severe the signs depend on the underlying cause as well as the progression of the disease.
In short-term jaundice, which is usually triggered by an infection, you may experience signs such as:
If the cause of jaundice is other than any infection, you may have signs such as weight loss or dry or patchy or itchy skin.
But if the underlying cause is pancreatic or biliary tract cancers, the most common sign involved is abdominal pain.
In many cases, jaundice is an outcome of liver disease and may occur along with conditions such as:
Jaundice can be an onset of any problem in any of the three phases in bilirubin production.
Before the bilirubin is secreted by biles, you may experience what is called unconjugated jaundice. The cause of abnormal bilirubin levels in the blood could be:
When bilirubin is produced, jaundice can be triggered by:
After bilirubin is secreted, jaundice may be caused by any blockage of the bile ducts because of:
Dubin-Johnson syndrome: It is an inherited form of chronic jaundice that restricts conjugated bilirubin from being generated by the cells of the liver.
Crigler-Najjar syndrome: It is an inherited condition that disrupts an enzyme that is responsible for processing bilirubin.
Pseudojaundice: It does not involve a serious threat to life. The yellowing of the skin is due to the presence of too much beta-carotene. The main cause is consuming too much carrot, melon, pumpkin, etc.
In Ayurveda, Jaundice is given a different name, Kamala. As per Ayurveda, the disease in the body is an outcome of aggravated doshas, namely Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. So the treatment for jaundice in Ayurveda usually involves pacifying aggravated body energies with the help of herbal concoctions, ancient procedures and therapies. A Satvik diet is also recommended to the patients who undergo treatment at AyuKarma to help get rid of toxins or Ama from the body. Aggravated doshas may block the channels of the body and result in toxins production.
As more and more toxins pile up in the body, the result could be disruption in the functioning of the organs.
Also, the procedures, which are meant to help the liver function well, stimulate the function of the liver and increase bile flow.
