WHAT IS SEXUAL DYSFUNCTION?

Sexual dysfunction is a problem that prevents you from leading a healthy sexual life. It can happen at any phase of the sexual response cycle. The sexual response cycle refers to a group of emotions such as orgasm, plateau, excitement, etc., while you are intimidating with your partner. Desire and arousal make a healthy portion in the excitement phase of the sexual response.

While research says that it is common to experience sexual dysfunction at any point in life, sexuality tends to decrease with age.

Because treatment options are available, you can always talk to your healthcare about your sexual problems and get the solution. Ayurvedic treatment helps individuals with low vitality to boost their sexual performance with herbal medicines only.

What are the types of sexual dysfunction?

Sexual dysfunction generally is broadly categorized into four categories:

  • Desire disorders: Lack of sexual desire.
  • Arousal disorders: Inability to become physically aroused during sexual intercourse. Arousal disorder means you are emotionally inclined to have sex, but your body isn’t into it.
  • Orgasm disorders: Delay or absence of orgasm.
  • Pain disorders: Pain during intercourse.

Libido lowdown

Low libido means low drive or desire for sexual intercourse. In males, low testosterone is the leading cause of low libido or sexual desire for any person. In women, the loss of sexual desire is attributed to hormonal imbalance, menopause, breastfeeding, etc.

Other causes include:

  • hypertension
  • diabetes
  • medications
  • relationship problems
  • sexual inhibitions
  • stress
  • fatigue
  • fear of pregnancy

Sexual dysfunction in Males

Erectile dysfunction (ED)

Erectile dysfunction means the penis cannot get erected for sexual intercourse. There are a variety of reasons for ED in males, such as:

  • impaired blood flow
  • an injury to the penis
  • a nerve disorder blocking the nerves surrounding the penis
  • psychological disorders like stress or depression also cause ED
  • relationship issues
  • Peyronie’s disease
  • chronic illness
  • some medications

It is important to learn that erectile dysfunction can cause emotional disruption between you and your partner. It can lead to anxiety because of an unsatisfactory sexual life. Talk to your doctor about your sexual life and get treated.

Ejaculation disorders

Premature ejaculation occurs when a man ejaculates sooner than his partner would like to during intercourse.

Many times, premature ejaculation can be a result of performance anxiety.

Other causes may include:

  • psychological stressors
  • sexual inhibitions
  • nerve damage
  • damage to the spinal cord
  • medications

Impaired ejaculation is when you cannot ejaculate at all, while retrograde ejaculation is something that happens in people with diabetic neuropathy.

Sometimes during orgasm, ejaculation enters the bladder instead of releasing out of the penis. Although this does not cause any significant medical issues, it can impair fertility. See your doctor, if you have it.

Sexual dysfunction in Females

Pain and discomfort

Pain during sexual activity can be related to many causes, such as inadequate lubrication and tense vaginal muscles. Pain can also be because of neurological, bowel, or urinary tract disorders. In women, hormonal changes of menopause also result in uncomfortable intercourse. A reduction in estrogen levels can result in the thinning of the skin and vaginal lining and decrease lubrication in the genital area.

Difficulty having an orgasm

Stress and fatigue do not let an individual lead a healthy sexual life. It is not possible to achieve orgasm if your sexual desire is low or when your hormones are not ordinal.

According to Harvard Medical School, a female sexual response is only based on quality. If you are satisfied with your sex life, even if you do not undergo orgasms, it means you do not have sexual dysfunction.

Signs and Symptoms

In Men:

  • Inability to achieve or keep an erection so firm for intercourse.
  • Absent or inability to hold up ejaculation despite enough sexual stimulation.
  • Inability to control the timing of ejaculation- For instance, premature ejaculation.

In women:

  • Inability to achieve orgasm.
  • Inadequate vaginal lubrication before and during intercourse.

In men and women:

  • Low desire for sex
  • Inability to become aroused
  • Pain with intercourse

When to see your doctor

Ongoing sexual dysfunction can lead to anxiety in both partners. Things may turn into something awful if you do not talk about it with your partner.

If the situation does not improve on its own, you need to see a doctor. Share your medical history, including over-the-counter medications you have been taking.

Your doctor will begin with a physical exam and suggest therapies and counseling together with ayurvedic treatment according to the underlying cause.

Causes

Physical Causes: Many medical conditions are also related to sexual dysfunction- for instance, diabetes, hypertension, blood vessels disorders, heart problems, neurological disorders, hormonal imbalance, chronic kidney disease, liver failure, and substance abuse, etc. Additionally, side effects of certain medications also result in decreased ability to enjoy your sexual life.

Psychological Causes: Stress and anxiety due to professional and personal life may also induce sexual dysfunction and abstains you from enjoying pleasurable sex. Marital or relationship issues, guilts, body shaming, sexual trauma, and other forms of depleting energy may affect your sexual ability.

Ayurvedic treatment for sexual dysfunction

As per Ayurveda, sex is one of the third pillars of life, the other two being diet and sleep. These pillars make a base for a healthy life and promote longevity.

In the case of erectile dysfunction, the Apaana Vayu, one of the five types of Vayu, is located in the bladder, testicles, Penis, thigs, anus, and colon. The function of Apaana Vayu is the ejaculation of semen and elimination of urine and stool.

The process happens when a man has a desire to have sex; he becomes sensitive to touch. Vayu located in the skin causes signals to flow from skin to brain; this causes him a sensation of touch. In response to this, arousal is caused, which amplifies the actions of Vayu, and at this moment, excess heat of Pitta is generated. This results in an increase in blood flow and body temperature, which makes an erection possible.

Ayurveda has numerous herbal remedies for sexual dysfunction, which contain aphrodisiacs. They enhance potency by improving the span of erection, hardness and prevent sexual dysfunction.

Ayurvedic treatment for sexual dysfunction at AyuKarma focuses on improvement in health using all the natural ways. Equal emphasis is also laid on a diet that has foods to restore sexual urges. Yoga and meditation, along the way, help to relieve the stress that causes sexual dysfunction.
